Enchanted Rock State Park

Enchanted Rock State Park sign
Whether looking for a nice place to visit or wanting to get a good work out in, this is a good stop. It’s located approximately 15 miles north of Fredericksburg, Texas and 15 miles south of Llano, Texas. It’s a “mountain” created out of enormous pink granite pluton rock. This place has caves, rock climbing, camping, hiking and more.

1. They have one main cave marked on the map you receive at the parks headquarters when you enter. It has some places in it where you can actually stand up, so you’re not crawling the entire way and it is self-guided. There are at least two more caves that I know of, one is at the end of the main cave (it’s a tight squeeze) and another that is on the northwest side of the rock.

2. You can climb up the steep slopes or over tons of large rocks scattered around the rock. Make sure you use caution and even take ropes if you know what you’re doing.

3. They have two hiking trails that you can either walk, run or even mountain bike the terrain. The first is the “loop trail” which goes around the bottom of enchanted rock. Its 4 miles long and consists mainly of gravel and dirt. The second is the “summit trail,” it pretty much goes up enchanted rock at an angle. You climb 425 feet in about .6 miles. It’s a good workout but you can climb and stop at your own pace. Once you make it to the top of the rock it’s a rewarding view. You can see some of the beautiful sites of Texas. If you go towards the night time you can see all the stars too.

4. They have three different campsites.
The first is the “walk-in campsite” 8 people per site and they have 46 sites.

Amenities include:
  • Picnic table
  • Outdoor grill
  • Fire ring
  • Tent pad
  • Water nearby
  • Lantern post
  • Restrooms with showers

The second and third are “primitive backpacking” 4 people per site and they have 30 sites and “youth group primitive area” 50 people per site but this one only has one site. You have to hike about 1-3 miles depending on which spot you choose. They have composting toilets and that’s about it.

5. If you’re visiting or staying the night, make sure you bring plenty of water. Make sure you check their website or call ahead before heading that way. Sometimes they are closed on holidays and weekends. I love making this trip at least once a year. Hope your visit is as good as mine.
