The National Mall
If you’re in Washington D.C and looking for some good sites
to visit, here are some of the best places to go. Most people walk the National
Mall (Capitol to the Abraham Lincoln Memorial) during the day and it can
sometimes be crowded, but I think it looks better at night with all of the
lights and a lot less people.
1. The Capitol is located at East Capitol St NE & First St SE, Washington, DC 20004. This is
where the National Mall begins. You can schedule a tour of the Capitol which
generally takes about 90 minutes but is well worth it. You can plan your visit
here: http://www.visitthecapitol.gov/plan-visit/book-tour-capitol#.VB9vzxbgKSo
2. The White House
is a good stop during the day or at night. You have to go through your Member
of congress in order to get inside but regardless it is still a great place to
see from the outside. http://www.whitehouse.gov/about/tours-and-events
3. These Memorials are located between the Washington
Monument and the Abraham Lincoln Memorial and they are better seen during the
day:
- World War 2 Memorial
- Vietnam Veterans Memorial·
- Korean War Memorial
4. Monuments Dedicated to our Presidents:
- Washington Monument is right in the middle of the National Mall. It has a very nice view of the surrounding area from the top. You can get free tickets at the Washington Monument Lodge, located along 15th Street, it opens at 8:30 a.m., For same day, timed tickets on a first-come first-served basis. Get more info here: http://www.nps.gov/wamo/planyourvisit/feesandreservations.htm
- Thomas Jefferson Memorial is just to the left of the Lincoln memorial. Its built right on the side of Tidal Basin which connects to the Potomac River.
·
- Lincoln Memorial is at the end of the National Mall and has the Reflecting Pool in front of it. It is beautiful to walk at night and has plenty of lights surrounding it.
5. You can walk yourself and explore or you can take a sightseeing
tour on foot, bike, bus, or even Segway. Have fun and here is a link to see
which tour fits you best: http://dc.about.com/od/walkingtours/a/5BestTours.htm
